I tweaked one of the patterns in the document "6 Fun With Knitting Dishcloths Part 1" document located on the Monthly Dishcloth KAL list on Yahoo that I'm a member of. The second pattern is called appropriately, "Kitchen Cloth". I call it the Leftover cloth because of the notation that it's great for using up leftovers and so many on this list recommended it for that purpose.

Leftover Dishtowel

Needle size: US 8 (5mm)
Cast on 50 stitches

Rows 1 and 2:  Knit across all stitches

Rows 3 and 4:  K2, *K1, P1, repeat from * across to last 2 stitches, K2

Repeat all 4 rows to desired length (12”) ending with Row 2.

Make the top:

Next row: K2 tog all the way across(25sts)

Next row: Knit

Next row: (K1, K2tog) across to the last 2 sts, K2tog.(There should be 15 stitches)If your number ends up different as in more stitches, just make it up

in the next row. If you end up with fewer stitches, rip back a little and adjust

the decreases so you end up with 15 stitches.

Knit 30 rows even.

Decrease:

1: K2 tog, knit to last two stitches, K2tog (13 sts)

2: Knit

3: K2tog, knit to last two stitches, K2tog. (11sts)

4: Knit

5: K2tog, K3, YO, K2tog, K2, K2tog. (9sts)

6: Knit

7: K2tog, knit to last two stitches, K2tog. (7sts)

Bind off. Work in ends.

Fold over and decide where you want a button, the YO is the buttonhole.

Sew on a button.
